Sabina Yesmin’s story of hassle-free normal delivery of her child in Aalo NVD center
Sabina Yesmin, a 21-year-old woman lives in the poor urban settlement of Ershadnagar Block-08, Tongi under Gazipur City Corporation, with her husband and in-laws. Community Health and Nutrition Worker (CHNW) Shorifa Sultana, on a routine household visit in her catchment area incidentally identified Sabina in her first trimester of pregnancy. Shorifa could built a rapport with Sabina and motivated her to go to nearby Aalo Clinic, Ershadnagar next day for Antenatal Care (ANC) service. Sabina was unaware that the Aalo Clinic, supported by UNICEF and SIDA, provides free maternal & child, health & nutrition services including normal delivery. Shorifa intelligently discussed with Sabina’s husband & in-laws for accompanying her to Aalo Clinic.
Sabina’s first delivery was done at home, hence CHNW Shorifa had to face a little bit challenge in counseling, so she took a substantial long time to convince Sabina’s family about the importance of ANC service and facility based normal delivery. Finally encouraged Sabina reported to Aalo Clinic next day, along with CHNW Shorifa. Sabina underwent thorough ANC check-up and expressed her surprise to see Aalo Clinic’s facilities. Back home, Sabina was closely followed up by CHNW Shorifa, who ensured six (6) ANC visits throughout her pregnancy. The concerned female doctor at the Aalo Clinic had built a relationship with Sabina and counselled her on maternal nutrition assisted by a professional counselor. Doctor also sensitized her about pregnancy danger-signs and the risks associated with home delivery. As expected date of delivery (EDD) approached, Sabina got her admitted to midwifery-led 24/7 Aalo Normal Vaginal Delivery (NVD) center, Ershadnagar with labor pain. Trained midwives took all necessary prenatal care and monitored progress of labor skillfully. To Sabina’s great satisfaction, a healthy male baby (Safwan) weighing 2,980 grams was born safely and uneventfully. It was a happy moment for Sabina and her family to get a hassle-free delivery service at their door-step who once opted for home delivery before meeting CHNW Shorifa. The overall service is a testimony of timely home visit, ANC, effective counseling and finally a successful normal delivery at Aalo Clinic.
It is worth mentioning that skilled midwives provided comprehensive ANC, prenatal, perinatal and postnatal care including essential newborn care with immediate skin-to-skin contact and early initiation of breastfeeding within 30 minutes of birth. Sabina also received personalized counseling on the continuation of exclusive breastfeeding up to six (6) months and complementary feeding thereafter. Counselor also gave practical demonstrations on proper breastfeeding positioning, attachment and burping techniques to ensure effective breastfeeding practices. During follow-up interactions, Sabina honestly shared her concerns about family’s financial constraints and reiterated her heartfelt gratitude for free service at Aalo Clinic. Her joyful picture says it all.
