The Story of Dr. Md. Asifur Rahman

As the Health Manager at Eminence Associates for Social Development I, Dr. Md. Asifur Rahman, am deeply committed to addressing the significant health challenges stemming from rapid urbanization in Bangladesh, particularly in megacities like Dhaka.

Urbanization is one of the leading global trends of the 21st century that has a significant impact on health. Over 55% of the world’s population live in urban areas – a proportion that is expected to increase to 68% by 2050. As most future urban growth will take place in developing countries, the world today has a unique opportunity to guide urbanization and other major urban development trends in a way that protects and promotes health. This is important, not least because the health and well-being of citizens is perhaps a city’s most important asset.

Bangladesh continues to experience rapid urbanization, addressing urban health challenges has never been more critical. As Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh continues to expand, air pollution has become one of the most pressing urban health challenges, posing severe risks to public well-being. With my background in public health, epidemiology and healthcare system strengthening, I would like to emphasize the urgent need for a collaborative, evidence-based response to mitigate the health impacts of air pollution in our city.

Air pollution is a silent killer, contributing to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular complications and increased mortality rates, particularly among children, the elderly, and vulnerable communities. Research has shown that the deteriorating air quality in Dhaka significantly exacerbates the burden of non-communicable diseases, placing an additional strain on our already overburdened healthcare system.

To address this crisis, we must prioritize multi-sectoral action, incorporating policy-level advocacy, urban planning reforms and community-driven interventions. Strengthening air quality monitoring, integrating health data with environmental indicators and promoting sustainable urban mobility are crucial steps toward reducing pollution exposure. Furthermore, healthcare professionals must be equipped with the necessary tools to diagnose and manage air pollution-related illnesses effectively. In these way, we can develop innovative strategies to safeguard public health and create a healthier, more sustainable Dhaka for future generations.
