BUHN: Participating a Dissemination Workshop on RUSH of KCC

BUHN (Bangladesh Urban Health Network) participated in the Dissemination Workshop of the study titled “Urbanization, Climate Change, and Localization Perspective for Urban Health System Strengthening: A Mixed-Method Participatory Study on Khulna City” on Resilient Urban System for Health (RUSH) in Khulna City Corporation (KCC) held at Hotel Sarina, Baithak Hall on December 26, 2023. The event emphasized on Localization Perspective on Strengthening Urban Health Systems under RUSH project aiming for tackling urbanization, climate change to strengthen urban health systems. 

The workshop officially began with a welcoming address by Mr. Md. Emranul Haq, the Consortium Program Manager at Concern Worldwide Bangladesh, and ATM Zakir Hossain, the Executive Director of Jagrata Juba Shangha (JJS), setting the context and the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing the critical issues of urbanization, climate change, and urban health systems.

The workshop featured a comprehensive presentation by Dr. Hasnat M Alamgir, a Professor at Southeast University and the Study Coordinator. Dr. Alamgir's presentation focused on providing key findings and insights from the study entitled "Urbanization, Climate Change, and Localization Perspective for Urban Health System Strengthening: A Mixed-Method Participatory Study on Khulna City." This presentation shaded lights on the specific challenges faced by Khulna City and offering potential solutions for strengthening urban health systems.

The session also identified valuable perspectives from designated discussants, including Dr. Professor Md. Abul Faiz, the Former Director General of DGHS (Directorate General of Health Services), showing his concerns for treatment seeking traits of slum dwellers from pharmacies. He noted 89-90% dwellers treatment seeking habits from pharmacy and suggested to enhance the pharmacy services for 100% treatment coverage Additionally, Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, the Executive Chairman of the Power and Participatory Research Center (PPRC) & Team Leader emphasized the significance of working together to tackle the complex challenges posed by the intersection of urbanization and climate change on health systems in urban areas. Throughout the open discussion session, these esteemed professionals provided crucial insights that enriched the discourse on urban health challenges

Representatives of the BUHN, including Dr. Margub Aref Jahangir, Health Officer (Urban), Unicef Bangladesh, Technical Support Team Member of BUHN; Rased Rabbi, President of Dhaka Reporters Unity, Advisory Committee Member of BUHN and Dr. Md. Shamim Hayder Talukder, Chief Executive Officer, Eminence; Member Secretary of BUHN, availed the opportunity to emphasize the role and scope of BUHN as an effective platform and model for ensuring community engagement in addressing urban health challenges.

Closing remarks were delivered by special guests, Mr. Manish Kumar Agarwal, the Country Director of Concern Worldwide, highlighting the significance of the workshop's outcomes and the collaborative efforts needed to implement effective strategies for resilient urban health systems.

Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman Executive Chairman, PPRC & Team Leader, in his summary, emphasized the key takeaways from the workshop, stressing the importance of continued collaboration to strengthen urban health systems. The workshop, orchestrated by BUHN, not only fostered a collaborative platform for meaningful discussions but also set the stage for future initiatives to address the challenges posed by urbanization and climate change on urban health systems in Bangladesh.
