Smarter Health for All: How AI is Revolutionizing Public Health

AI is an ever-evolving force that is transforming sectors all over of us, including public health. In addition, while AI can be helpful to improve disease surveillance, monitor and allocate scarce resources and deliver personalized healthcare services when aligned with strategic goals, it also occupies and exploits multiple opportunities.

AI has great potential to assist public health in one of its most promising areas, i.e. predictive analytics. AI models that analyze large-scale health data can predict disease outbreaks, track infection spread, and assist governments in reacting more preemptively. For example, artificial intelligence was instrumental in predicting the severity levels of COVID-19, which enabled preemptive treatment and solution techniques.

AI also plays a role in health equity, signaling underserved populations by following patterns in the data. Public health workers can leverage this knowledge to create tailored interventions, ensuring marginalized populations have access to necessary healthcare services. In addition, AIintegrated chatbots and virtual agents are improving health communication, particularly in rural parts of the world, where healthcare workers are limited.

Yet, AI also needs to be aligned with public health, for ethical reasons. Transparency, data privacy and bias mitigation are essential to making sure the technology is beneficial to all communities. Therefore, public health systems should train professionals to remove biases rather than reinforce them; to approach and embrace a human-centered and inclusive design process.

Realigning AI with public health will require a collaborative approach. Solution for policymakers,
technologists, healthcare workers, and communities to collaborate while designing health outcomes solutions that prioritize health outcome over commercial outcome.

Finally, while AI has tremendous potential to impact public health in profound ways, its effects will be determined by how ethically and equitably it is used. Thereby, we have to work in good governance, inclusive data use and prioritizing human well-being, so that AI becomes a great assistance in creating healthy and resilient societies.
